About New Teardrop Uprights
The most common type of rack in the industries is the teardrop rack. It is regarded as the universal rack system, and the Teardrop style rack is produced by the majority of manufacturers. The majority of teardrop-style racks are compatible. The teardrop shape of the perforations on the front or front of the upright column inspired the name. The openings (slots) that connect the rack’s beams to the upright frame are referred to as teardrop uprights.

Buying Guidelines for New Teardrop Uprights
When purchasing selective pallet racks, consider the following factors to ensure you make the best choice for your warehouse needs:
- Storage Space and Layout: Assess the available space in your warehouse and plan the layout accordingly. Consider the height, width, and depth of the racks to maximize storage efficiency.
- Load Capacity: Determine the weight and size of the products you will be storing. Ensure the racks can support the maximum load capacity required for your inventory.
- Additional Post Reinforcement: Higher upright capacity can be achieved by welding an additional post on the back side of upright post. Ask or select reinforced upright for higher capacity is needed.
- Seismic Considerations: Depending on your location, you may need to comply with specific seismic requirements. This could involve using thicker gauge steel, larger base plates, and modified anchoring methods. Additional bolt on seismic foot plates are also available upon request.
- Accessibility and Selectivity: Decide between selectivity and storage density. Selective racks offer complete accessibility to each pallet but are limited to one pallet deep.
- Type of Lift Equipment: Consider the type of lift equipment you will be using with the racking system. Ensure the racks are compatible with your forklifts or other material handling equipment.
- Installation and Maintenance: Plan for the installation process and ongoing maintenance. Proper installation is crucial for safety and efficiency. Regular inspections and maintenance will help extend the lifespan of the racks.
- Safety Features: Look for racks with safety features such as beam locks, column protectors, and safety clips to prevent accidents and damage.
- Cost and Budget: While it’s important to stay within budget, avoid compromising on quality. Cheaper racks may have lower durability and safety features.
- Compliance with Regulations: Ensure the racks comply with local building codes and safety regulations. This includes fire safety standards and load-bearing requirements.
By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and select the best selective pallet racks for your warehouse.
Choosing the correct upright height for your pallet racks is crucial for optimizing storage space and ensuring safety in your warehouse. This guide will help you understand the factors to consider when selecting the right upright height for your needs.
Key Considerations selecting upright height:-
- Ceiling Height: Measure the height of your warehouse ceiling. Ensure there’s enough clearance for the tallest pallet rack, including any additional height from pallets and forklifts.
- Pallet Size and Load: Consider the height of your pallets and the items stored on them. Ensure the upright height accommodates the tallest load with some extra space for safe handling.
- Forklift Reach: Check the maximum reach of your forklifts. The upright height should be within the operational range of your equipment to ensure efficient loading and unloading.
- Future Expansion: Plan for future growth. If you anticipate needing more storage space, consider taller uprights that can accommodate additional levels of racking.
Calculating Upright Height
- Determine Pallet Height: Measure the height of your tallest pallet load.
- Add Beam Height: Include the height of the beams that will support the pallets.
- Include Clearance: Add a safety clearance of at least 6 inches (15 cm) between the top of the load and the next beam level.
- Total Height: Sum these measurements to determine the total height required for each level. Multiply by the number of levels to get the total upright height.
Example Calculation
- Pallet Height: 48 inches (122 cm)
- Beam Height: 4 inches (10 cm)
- Clearance: 6 inches (15 cm)
- Total per Level: 48 + 4 + 6 = 58 inches (147 cm)
- Number of Levels: 4
- Total Upright Height: 58 x 4 = 232 inches (589 cm)

Frequently asked questions
Will your teardrop beams fit my existing teardrop uprights?
Usually, yes. Teardrop is the most common rack style and most teardrop parts from different makers fit each other. Send us a photo of your upright and beam connector and we will confirm before you order.
Welded or bolted bracing: which should I choose?
Welded uprights are the standard choice for most warehouses. Bolted uprights cost less and suit light to medium duty storage; a damaged brace can be unbolted and replaced, but they take longer to assemble and the bolts need checking from time to time.
How far apart can I set the beam levels?
Teardrop slots are punched on 2" centers, so each beam level can be moved up or down in 2" steps.
What does "lb cap/pair UDL" mean?
It is the rated capacity of a pair of beams when the load is spread evenly across both beams (uniformly distributed load). Do not exceed it.
Can I mix teardrop and keystone parts?
No. Teardrop and keystone uprights use different slot shapes, so their beams are not interchangeable. Match new parts to the style you already have.
Do you have used teardrop rack?
Often, yes. Used teardrop uprights and beams from buybacks and liquidations are listed in the inventory tables on this page. Stock changes often, so call to confirm quantities.
Need a full teardrop rack quote?
Send your layout or a list of sizes and quantities. We will confirm the parts, freight and ship date on one quote.
