Punch deck has large openings, about 50% open area on common rack sizes, so sprinkler water can reach the levels below. Its repeating corrugations give even strength across the whole shelf.

Because the deck sits flush with the top of the step beam, there is no waterfall edge, and the beam face stays clear for labels and bar codes.
