Choosing the Right Size Beam
Load Capacity
Determine the maximum weight each beam level needs to support. Calculate the total load by adding the weight of the pallets and products on each shelf — the beam’s load capacity should exceed this total weight.
Beam Length
Measure the distance between the upright frames (rack width) and choose beams that match this width. Standard lengths are often 8, 9, 10, or 12 feet, but custom lengths are also available.
Beam Profile
Our teardrop beams come with a standard 1-5/8″ step, which affects load distribution and compatibility with accessories like wire decking, wood supports, and pallet support crossbars.
Beam Face Height
A larger face height generally allows for higher load capacity but also affects vertical clearance between storage levels — ensure it accommodates your tallest items while making efficient use of vertical space.
How Teardrop Beams Connect
The beam end is shaped with a hooked pin that slides into one of the teardrop-shaped punch-outs running down the upright column. Weight from the pallet load pulls the hook down and inward, tightening the connection rather than loosening it — no bolts, welding, or extra hardware needed for a standard installation. A safety clip then locks over the connector to prevent it from being lifted back out accidentally.

Calculating Beam Length
1. Measure pallet width — e.g. if your pallets are 40 inches wide, you need beams that support this width.
2. Add clearance — include a small clearance between pallets and the upright post for easy loading/unloading, typically 3–6 inches.
3. Determine total length — multiply pallet width by number of pallets per level and add clearance.
Example: two 40″ pallets, with 5″ clearance to each upright post and 6″ clearance between pallets: 5 + 40 + 6 + 40 + 5 = 96 inches total beam length. You can choose your own clearance (2–6″) to determine desired beam length.
A Few More Things to Consider
Measure frame depth — proper frame depth ensures pallets overhang the beams by about three inches, so beams carry the pallet’s full weight.
Aisle width — beam length should allow efficient use of space while maintaining adequate aisle width for forklift operations.
Rack configuration — decide how many pallets you want per level (single, double, or multiple), and choose beam length accordingly.
Future flexibility — adjustable beams provide flexibility for different pallet sizes and configurations down the road.
