Reading capacity
Capacity is for a pair of beams with the load spread evenly across them. Choose a beam rated above your heaviest load, and leave a safety margin.
Face height
A taller face carries more weight but takes more vertical space. For hand-pick levels a shorter face saves height.
1-5/8" step
The step takes wire decking, pallet supports and wood decking, so the load spreads across the whole shelf.
Choosing length
Match the beam length to the opening between uprights. 96" beams are the common choice for two standard pallets per level.

When selecting the right size pallet rack beam for your system, consider the following factors:
- Load Capacity: Determine the maximum weight each beam level needs to support. Calculate the total load by adding the weight of the pallets and products on each shelf. The beam’s load capacity should exceed this total weight.
- Beam Length: Measure the distance between the upright frames (rack width). Choose beams that match this width. Standard lengths are often 8, 9, 10 feet or 12 ft but custom lengths are also available.
- Beam Profile: Our teardrop beam comes with standard 1-5/8″ step. The profile affects load distribution and make it compatible with accessories like wire decking, wood supports and pallet support crossbars. Load can be evenly distributed to entire shelf via support to the beam using this 1-5/8″ step. The standardized step size simplifies the installation process, ensuring that beams can be easily and correctly positioned within the racking system.
- Beam Face Height: The height of the beam face directly impacts the load capacity of the beam. A larger face height generally allows for a higher load capacity, making it suitable for heavier items. Also, you need to consider the vertical space needed for your products. The beam height determines the vertical clearance between storage levels. Ensure it accommodates your tallest items and efficient use of the vertical space. For hand pick levels, it is important to use smaller face width beam to utilize the vertical space ergonomically & efficiently.
- Safety Factors: Factor in safety margins. Don’t push beams to their maximum capacity; leave room for unexpected load variations.

Example Calculation
- Pallet Width: 40 inches
- Number of Pallets per Level: 2
- Clearance: Clearance between upright post to pallet (5 inches) + Pallet width(40 Inches) + Clearance between pallet(6 Inches) + Pallet width(40 Inches) + Clearance between upright post to pallet (5 inches)
- Total Beam Length: 96 Inches.

Welded uprights are the standard choice for most warehouses. Bolted uprights cost less and suit light to medium duty storage; a damaged brace can be unbolted and replaced, but they take longer to assemble and the bolts need checking from time to time.
How far apart can I set the beam levels?
Teardrop slots are punched on 2" centers, so each beam level can be moved up or down in 2" steps.
What does "lb cap/pair UDL" mean?
It is the rated capacity of a pair of beams when the load is spread evenly across both beams (uniformly distributed load). Do not exceed it.
Can I mix teardrop and keystone parts?
No. Teardrop and keystone uprights use different slot shapes, so their beams are not interchangeable. Match new parts to the style you already have.
